개요

마라타 제국, 또는 마라타 연맹은 인도 아대륙에 존재했던 근세 인도의 제국이다. 페슈와의 영역과 4개의 주요 독립적인 마라타계 국가로 구성되었으며, 과거에 대한 명목상의 지도력은 전자가 가졌다.

마라타인들은 현재의 마하라슈트라주 서부 데칸고원에서 발원한 마라티어를 사용하는 농민 집단으로, 17세기에 시바지의 영도 하에 비자푸르 술탄국과 무굴 제국에 반란을 일으키며 '힌다비 스와라지야'(직역: '힌두인의 자치')를 주장하며 세력을 불렸다. 아우랑제브 황제의 종교적인 태도는 비무슬림을 소외시켰으며, 마라타 봉기는 그의 병력과 재정에 큰 손실을 입혔다. 마라타 정부는 또한 다른 마라타인 집단 출신의 전사, 행정관, 기타 귀족들을 포함했다. 마라타 왕국으로 불리는 시바지의 군주국은 18세기 바지라오 1세의 영도 하에 거대한 영역으로 확장되었다. 샤후 1세 시대부터 마라타인들은 무굴 황제를 명목상 종주국으로 인정했다. 이는 다른 동시대 인도 세력들과 유사했으나, 실제로는 1737년에서 1803년 사이에 무굴 정치는 대부분 마라타인들에 의해 통제되었다.
