개요

포르투갈 공화국(포르투갈어: República Portuguesa 헤푸블리카 포르투게자[*], 영어: Portuguese Republic) 또는 포르투갈(포르투갈어: Portugal, IPA: [puɾtuˈɣaɫ], 문화어: 뽀르뚜갈)은 남유럽에 위치한 나라로, 이베리아반도의 서부와 북대서양 상의 군도들을 그 영토로 한다. 국토의 총 면적은 92,090 km2 로, 동쪽과 북쪽은 스페인, 서쪽과 남쪽은 대서양을 맞댄 대륙부와 대서양 상의 두 자치지역인 아소르스 제도와 마데이라 제도로 구성되어 있다. 포르투갈은 유럽 대륙에서 가장 서쪽에 위치한 나라이다. 이름은 제2의 도시 포르투의 라틴어 이름 "포르투스 칼레"(라틴어: Portus Cale)에서 유래하였다.

오늘날 포르투갈의 국경 안에 포함된 지역은 선사 시대부터 계속 사람이 거주해 왔다. 갈라이키족과 루시타니족 같은 켈트인들은 후에 로마 공화정에 통합되었고, 이후 수에비족과 서고트족 같은 게르만족이 정착하였다. 8세기부터는 무어인이 이베리아반도를 정복하기 시작한다. 기독교도의 헤콩키스타 도중에 초기엔 갈리시아 왕국, 후엔 레온 왕국의 일부로 포르투칼레 백국(포르투갈어: Condado de Portucale 혹은 Condado Portucalense)이 성립된다. 1139년 포르투갈 왕국의 성립과 1143년 독립 승인, 1249년 국경의 확립을 통해 포르투갈은 유럽에서 가장 오래된 민족 국가로 거듭난다.
