개요

캐나다(영어: Canada, 프랑스어: Canada 카나다[*])는 북아메리카에 위치한 나라로, 10개의 주와 3개의 준주로 구성되어 있다. 캐나다는 서쪽으로 태평양에 접하고, 동쪽으로는 대서양에 접하며 북쪽으로는 북극해와 접한다. 캐나다는 총 면적에서 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 나라이고 세계에서 가장 긴 해안선을 가지고 있다. 캐나다와 미국의 국경은 세계에서 가장 긴 국제 육지 국경이다. 캐나다는 기상 및 지질학적 측면에서 매우 다양한 지역으로 구성되어 있으며, 4,100만 명이 넘는 인구가 대부분 북위 55도 아래 도시 지역 및 미국 국경 150킬로미터 이내에 거주하는 인구가 적은 국가다. 캐나다의 수도는 오타와이며, 세 개의 가장 큰 대도시 지역은 토론토, 몬트리올, 밴쿠버이다. 미국과 마찬가지로 세계에서 손꼽는 다문화 국가 중 하나로, 여러 인종이 섞여있는데, 백인, 아시아인, 흑인, 원주민 등등으로 구성 되어있다.

캐나다가 현재 위치한 지역에는 수천 년 동안 원주민들이 계속해서 거주해 왔다. 16세기부터 영국과 프랑스 탐험대가 대서양 해안을 탐험한 뒤 나중에 캐나다에 정착했다. 여러 무력 충돌의 결과로, 프랑스는 1763년에 북미 대륙의 거의 모든 식민지를 영국에 양도하였다. 1867년, 세 개의 영국령 북아메리카 식민지가 연합하여 캐나다 연방을 형성했고, 캐나다 연방은 4개의 주를 가진 연방제 자치령이다. 이 때부터 캐나다의 주와 준주는 늘어났고 영국으로부터 더 큰 자치권을 부여받았다. 1931년의 웨스트민스터 헌장과 1982년 캐나다 법을 통해 캐나다의 자치권은 더욱 커졌고, 이 법들은 영국 의회에 대한 캐나다의 법적 종속을 완전히 끊은 것이었다.
