Als Römische Republik (lateinisch res publica, wörtlich eigentlich „öffentliche Sache, öffentliche Angelegenheit“, meist in der Bedeutung „Gemeinwesen“, auf moderne Verhältnisse übertragen auch „Staat“) bezeichnet man die Verfassungsform des Römischen Reiches in der Zeit zwischen dem Ende der Königsherrschaft (angeblich im Jahr 509 v. Chr.) und der Einrichtung des Prinzipats am 13. Januar 27 v. Chr. durch den Machtverzicht des römischen Senats, mit der die Epoche der römischen Kaiserzeit beginnt. Die Römische Republik wird seit Polybios oft als Mischverfassung mit aristokratischen und gewissen demokratischen Elementen bezeichnet, doch ist diese Interpretation, die griechische Vorstellungen auf Rom anwendet, nicht unproblematisch. Zugleich spielte im Staatsleben der Römer das kultische Element eine große Rolle (siehe Römische Religion), das durch unterschiedliche Institutionen Einfluss auf die res publica nahm.
