概覽
鄂圖曼帝國（鄂圖曼土耳其語：دولت عليه عثمانيه，土耳其語：Osmanlı İmparatorluğu），西方又稱土耳其帝國（法語：Empire turc），是1299年至1923年間存在於近東地區的帝國，得名自開國君主奧斯曼一世。以伊斯蘭教遜尼派為國教，其最大疆域跨越歐、亞、非三大洲，涵蓋東歐、西亞及北非的大部份區域，西接摩洛哥，東抵裏海及波斯灣，北及今奧地利和烏克蘭，南及今蘇丹與葉門，在文化上亦為東西薈萃。
鄂圖曼土耳其人源自於西突厥烏古斯人的游牧聯盟，其自1354年起首次渡海進入東歐，隨後數十年間相繼征服巴爾幹大部分地區，並日漸興盛。1453年，蘇丹穆罕默德二世征服了存續二千多年的羅馬帝國，並定都君士坦丁堡。1517年，鄂圖曼帝國兼併黎凡特、埃及與漢志，自此鄂圖曼蘇丹兼任遜尼派穆斯林的哈里發。
16世紀，蘇丹蘇萊曼一世的統治下鄂圖曼帝國國力鼎盛，成為政治與軍事雙重意義上的超級大國：首都君士坦丁堡是連接基督教歐洲與伊斯蘭東方世界的樞紐，帝國對地中海、紅海、黑海、阿拉伯海擁有制海權。其歐洲領土在17世紀達到高峰，控制現代中東歐不少國家，但在大土耳其戰爭戰敗後縮小。由於鄂圖曼帝國對歐洲人來說東方世界的異國魅力，18世紀歐洲也掀起一陣崇尚鄂圖曼文化與時尚的風潮。
16至18世紀間，鄂圖曼帝國是唯一能抗衡歐洲基督教國家的伊斯蘭教勢力，但最終仍不敵歐洲國家強大工業力量的衝擊。然而其卓越的戰略地理位置吸引英、法與其合作，在克里米亞戰爭中共同對抗俄羅斯帝國。第一次世界大戰中，鄂圖曼帝國加入同盟國，因敗於協約國之手而分裂。之後凱末爾領導土耳其國民運動，推翻蘇丹的統治並放棄部分鄂圖曼帝國的疆域，建立主權獨立但僅控制色雷斯及安納托力亞的土耳其共和國，鄂圖曼帝國滅亡。鄂圖曼帝國的崩潰也導致現代中東大部分國家的誕生，其中英、法瓜分了鄂圖曼帝國在伊拉克與沙姆的遺產，而埃及與馬格里布已先被剝離。
