Überblick

Das Britische Weltreich (englisch British Empire) war das vom 17. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert bestehende, größte Kolonialreich der Geschichte und vom Ende der Napoleonischen Ära bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg die führende Weltmacht. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner größten Ausdehnung, 1922, umfasste es mit 458 Millionen Einwohnern und ca. 33,67 Millionen km² sowohl ein Viertel der damaligen Weltbevölkerung als auch ein Viertel der Landfläche der Erde.

Unter der Herrschaft des Vereinigten Königreichs vereinte es Dominions, Kronkolonien, Protektorate, Mandatsgebiete und sonstige abhängige Territorien auf allen Kontinenten, die aus englischen und später britischen Überseebesitzungen, Handelsposten und Strafkolonien hervorgegangen waren. Auch nach ihrer Unabhängigkeit sind viele ehemalige Teile des Empire im Commonwealth of Nations verbunden.
