Überblick

Iran (persisch ايران, DMG Īrān, [ʔiːˈɾɒːn] , amtlich seit 1979 Islamische Republik Iran; auch der Iran; historisch als Exonym bis 1935 und teils darüber hinaus auch Persien) ist ein Staat in Vorderasien. Er wird im Norden vom Kaspischen Meer und im Süden durch den Persischen Golf begrenzt. Im Westen grenzt er an den Irak, im Nordwesten an die Türkei, Armenien und Aserbaidschan. Im Nordosten grenzt er an Turkmenistan, im Osten an Afghanistan und Pakistan.

Mit rund 90 Millionen Einwohnern (Stand 2024) und einer Fläche von etwa 1,65 Millionen Quadratkilometern zählt der Staat Iran zu den 20 bevölkerungsreichsten und größten Staaten der Erde. Seine Hauptstadt, zugleich seine größte Stadt und wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum ist Teheran mit 8,7 Millionen Einwohnern; weitere Städte mit mehr als 1,5 Millionen Einwohnern sind Maschhad, Isfahan, Karadsch, Schiras und Täbris.
