Überblick

Ecuador ([eku̯aˈdoːɐ̯], deutsch auch Ekuador; auf Kichwa Ecuador Mamallakta, spanisch República del Ecuador) ist eine Republik im Nordwesten Südamerikas zwischen Kolumbien und Peru und hat etwa 18 Millionen Einwohner. Die im Andenhochland (Sierra) auf 2850 m gelegene Hauptstadt heißt Quito; die größte Stadt Guayaquil liegt in der Pazifikküsten-Ebene (genannt Costa). Das Land ist nach der Äquatorlinie benannt, die durch den nördlichen Teil des Staatsgebiets verläuft. Die zu Ecuador gehörenden Galápagos-Inseln befinden sich zwischen 928 km und 1272 km westlich der Küste im Pazifik.
