Das Seleukidenreich gehörte zu den hellenistischen Diadochenstaaten, die sich nach dem Tod Alexanders des Großen bildeten. Während des 3. und 2. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. beherrschte das 312 v. Chr. begründete Reich den Vorderen Orient und erstreckte sich in seiner größten Ausdehnung von Kleinasien bis Baktrien.
