Überblick

Die Türkei (türkisch ; amtlich Republik Türkei, in der Schweiz amtlich und in deutscher förmlicher Kommunikation Republik Türkiye, türkisch Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, kurz T.C.) ist ein Einheitsstaat im vorderasiatischen Anatolien und südosteuropäischen Ostthrakien.

Geographisch wird das Land meist in sieben Regionen unterteilt. In der Türkei leben mehr als 86 Millionen Menschen (Stand: 2025) auf einer Fläche von 783.562 km². Im Ballungsraum von Istanbul lebt knapp ein Fünftel der Bevölkerung, daneben gibt es mit der Hauptstadt Ankara sowie mit Izmir, Bursa, Adana, Gaziantep, Konya und Denizli sieben weitere Millionenstädte. Der Grad der Urbanisierung lag 2021 bei 77 %. In der Türkei gibt es 22 UNESCO-Welterbestätten und zahlreiche Nationalparks.
