Überblick

Italien (italienisch [iˈtaːlja]), amtlich Italienische Republik (italienisch Repubblica Italiana [reˈpubblika itaˈljaːna]), ist ein Staat in Südeuropa. Mit knapp 59 Millionen Einwohnern ist es das viertbevölkerungsreichste vollständig zu Europa zählende Land. Die Hauptstadt und bevölkerungsreichste Stadt ist Rom und das Wirtschafts- und Finanzzentrum ist Mailand.

Das italienische Staatsgebiet liegt zum größten Teil auf der auf drei Seiten vom Mittelmeer umgebenen Apenninhalbinsel, der anschließenden norditalienischen Tiefebene sowie im südlichen Alpenbogen. Dazu kommen die großen Inseln Sizilien und Sardinien sowie mehrere kleinere Inselgruppen. Landgrenzen bestehen zu Frankreich, der Schweiz, Österreich und Slowenien sowie zu den Kleinstaaten Vatikanstadt und San Marino, die vollständig vom italienischen Staatsgebiet umschlossen sind.
