Überblick
Das Inkareich (Quechua: Tawantinsuyu – „Reich aus vier Teilen“) war das größte Reich im präkolumbischen Amerika. Dieses war nach den vier Himmelsrichtungen in Chinchan Suyu (Nord-Region), Kunti Suyu (West-Region), Anti Suyu (Ost-Region) und Qulla Suyu (Süd-Region) unterteilt. Das administrative, politische und militärische Zentrum des Reiches befand sich in der Stadt Cusco im heutigen Peru. Die Zivilisation der Inka entstand im frühen 13. Jahrhundert im Hochland der Anden. Ihre letzte Hochburg wurde 1572 von den Spaniern erobert. In seiner größten Ausdehnung verband das Reich Peru, das westliche Ecuador, das westliche und südliche Zentralbolivien, das nordwestliche Argentinien, einen großen Teil des heutigen Chile und den südwestlichsten Zipfel Kolumbiens zu einem Staat, der mit den historischen Imperien Eurasiens vergleichbar war und sich über eine Fläche von 950.000 km² erstreckte.
