Überblick

Das Generalkapitanat von Kuba (spanisch; Capitanía General de Cuba) war eine Verwaltungseinheit des Spanischen Kolonialreiches, die von den frühen 1600er Jahren bis 1898 bestand. Es umfasste die gesamte Insel Kuba (nach der Eroberung der Karibik durch Spanien) sowie zeitweise auch das spanische Florida und Louisiana und war lange Zeit ein wichtiger militärisch-strategischer Stützpunkt des spanischen Reichs. Sitz des Generalkapitäns war die Stadt Havanna. Das Generalkapitanat war formal für die meiste Zeit in zwei Teile gegliedert: das Hauptterritorium mit Hauptstadt Havanna, und Santiago de Cuba (Unterkapitanat), das jedoch militärisch stets Havanna unterstand. Kuba wiederum unterstand dem Vizekönigreich Neuspanien und nach der Unabhängigkeit Mexikos 1821 dem Überseeministerium (Ministerio del Ultramar) in Madrid.
